Philanthropic Initiatives

5 Days for the Homeless

This charity initiative was founded by business students from the University of Alberta in 2005. Their mission was to raise awareness of the issue of homelessness and at risk youth, raise monetary donations for local charities across the country, and to change the image of business students.

During this event, student participants live “homeless” on campus for five days in March in an attempt to achieve these goals. The students sleep outdoors and are only allowed to eat donated food and drinks, and must attend all of their scheduled classes. They begin the campaign with nothing but the clothes on their backs, a sleeping bag, and pillow, and construct makeshift homes out of cardboard. Since its inception, this movement has expanded from the University of Alberta to a national group of over sixteen universities. The 2012 campaign raised over $240,000, shattering its target. This is the sixth year that UNBC has participated in the event and we are happy to once again extend the opportunity to our corporate sponsors to become involved. We feel that by working with a corporate partner, we can use this event to bolster even more awareness to an important cause.
